About

Jeanne Langan (she/her), living in Flathead Valley, Montana. I've been making pots and working in clay studios since 2013. I started with a class I hoped would be a "nice break" in a full schedule, and found myself muddy until after 10pm more than a few nights. I fell in love with both farming and working in studios in Upstate New York, and moved to Montana in 2014 to be the apprentice for Whitefish Pottery and continue learning and working with clay.

After spending 4 years working in WFP's studio and as their downtown gallery manager, I found my way back to farming in 2018. I came on as a studio tech for Stumptown Art Studio's clay studio/co-op in 2018, quickly began instructing pottery classes there, and eventually took on the position of Clay Studio Manager. After almost 8 years of developing programing and growing SAS's clay community, I ended my time there in spring 2026. I'm excited to continue my own clay practice and explore my teaching and clay-organizing potential (and of course, farming)!

I love how collaborative pottery can be, and am so thankful for the people clay has brought into my life. I've found so much joy through teaching a LOT of classes and guiding folks in a communal studio setting. I think it's important for me to work to facilitate access to clay resources, and to connect with potters of all experiences.

About my work

I love bright and dynamic colors, fingerprints at the bottom of glazes, throwing lines/swirls in the bottom of bowls, and comfy handles.
I enjoy using different clay bodies and reclaim batches of a mix of clays. I like to let the color of the clay shine, and leave marks of the maker as visible design features. My current glaze style is a standard glossy midfire clear, with a rainbow of colorful motifs to move the eye. And I can never resist adding some lil dots.

My recent work explores texture in my surface design. I'm inspired by knitware, stitching, and embroidery. I've been playing with layers of design that are possible at each stage of the process by using slip, underglaze, and over-glaze decals alongside sculptural accents. While functional pieces make wonderful canvases, I love to create work that exists solely to bring joy and whimsy.

I also enjoy knitting, crochet, quilting, collage, and drawing.
